Originals & Commissions
Can I come and look at a painting before I buy it?
Yes, I love meeting clients in person. Just get in touch to book a studio visit.
Do you take commissions for custom abstract pieces?
Yes, I welcome commissions for custom abstract pieces.
Whether it's a specific colour palette, size, or theme, I enjoy collaborating with clients to create unique artworks for their home or office.
I have a short form that I send out to clients to help make the process easier. This asks questions about size, colours and materials you have in mind. This will help me produce a quote for you of the cost and length of time it will take to create your work.
If you're happy with that, we'll have a chat to answer any further questions - either by phone, Zoom or in person. A deposit of 50% of the cost is required up front, with the remainder due on completion, and before delivery.
If you would like, I can send work in progress images or videos, or show you how things are progressing via a live Zoom call.
If you'd like to get started, get in touch and I'll send you the form, and let's start creating art together!
Can you create custom-sized original artworks to fit specific spaces?
Absolutely. My largest piece is currently 1 metre square, and my smallest work is postcard size. But I'm happy to work bigger - or smaller (within reason!)
Sometimes a print might be a better option to replicate an existing work at a specific size, but please get in touch so we can discuss.
Do you provide certificates of authenticity for your artwork?
Yes, absolutely. Even for my smallest A6 works!
I have designed bespoke J R Oatts ART Certificates of Authenticity, which have a special reference number, stamp and are ALWAYS signed by me. This is how you know your work is an original creation from my studio.
If you've bought a piece of mine from an auction or gallery and for some reason it didn't have a Certificate of Authenticity signed and stamped by me, please get in touch.
How do you price your original artwork?
Pricing for my abstract artwork is based on size, complexity, materials used, and the time invested in creating each piece. I try to offer fair and competitive pricing that reflects the value of my work.
As an artist gains popularity and sells more, it is common for prices to increase, so I really hope that by investing in my work, you feel you are investing in my art career. If the prices on my site are out of your budget, but you still love a particular piece, please feel to get in touch about a print option or a smaller piece as a commission.
About my work & studio
What is abstract art?
Abstract art is a style of art that does not try to represent reality. Instead, it focuses on shapes, colours, forms and marks to express emotions, ideas or concepts.
What inspires your abstract artwork?
My work focuses on the theme of 'colour in motion', but my inspirations come from all sorts of places.
There is no short answer!
Artists I have always looked to for inspiration include Kandinsky, Georgia O'Keeffe, Matisse, Turner and Cezanne. More recently I am inspired by artists who use colour in new and inspiring ways like Mad C, Faye Bridgwater and Chloe Lamb.
I've been immersed in dance, fashion, music, LGBTQ+ culture, art deco and Golden-Age Hollywood films since childhood, so divas and iconic performers - and their costumes - are a huge influence, especially through the work of costume designer Bob Mackie.
My grandmother, a dressmaker and competitive flower arranger, was also a huge influence when I was growing up. Fabric and flowers, colour and texture everywhere.
I am also fascinated by landscapes and nature and how things are moving around us in the universe all the time - even if we can't see them.
As a former journalist, I am also curious about the story behind behind the story, and love satirical illustrations like the work of Gerald Scarfe.
When I was younger, I leaned towards figurative work of Picasso and Tamara de Lempicka, and the movement of the human body continues to inspire my practice.
What is your artistic background and training?
I have been painting all my life.
It was my biggest passion as a child. I did Art at A-Level, and thinking I had to do something academic to get a job, I studied History of Art, Design and Film at Middlesex University.
But the art making never went away and I went on to take short courses at Slade, City Academy and Central St Martins, as well as attending umpteen online courses and life drawing classes.
After over two decades working in the creative industries as an advertising creative, journalist, broadcaster, comedy writer and filmmaker, I started painting seriously again in 2019. I sold my first pieces in 2020 and had my first solo show in 2021.
Want to see what else I've done? Check out my Exhibitions page.
How do you create your abstract pieces?
I plan out my colour choices to ensure their is balance and harmony in the painting, but the creation process is intuitive and allows for spontaneous expression.
Generally, I create my abstract pieces by layering acrylic paint, gels and mediums to create texture. I will sometimes use another medium like a chalk or pastel to add final touches.
I like to move freely and energetically round the paper or canvas, creating gestural marks.
I enjoy experimenting with different techniques and tools – everything from plastic cutlery to old papers – to manipulate the paint in new ways.
This isn't set though. I don't like to get too set in my ways, so I may experiment with a new way of working for each new collection.
What materials and products do you use in your work?
I primarily work with acrylic paints due to their versatility and fast drying time. They help me create textured work that creates a visceral reaction.
Some people have said about my paintings: 'Is it wrong that I want to eat it?'*. I take that as a win.
I use quality canvases, canvas boards or wood blocks, brushes, palette knives, and occasionally mixed media elements to add texture and depth to my compositions.
For my paper pieces, I tend to use Hahnemühle acrylic paper as it has an amazing texture.
*I don't let them of course!
Do you collaborate with other artists or art organisations?
Yes, I love collaborating. I've worked with the likes of Mayfair Art Weekend, Roy's Art Fair, record companies, individuals, charities and other organisations on live painting projects and bespoke painting commissions.
I am also happy to work with other artists or art organisations on working together, content creation, or speaking at events or on podcasts.
Each project is completely unique, so just get in touch so we can discuss what you need.
Are there any upcoming exhibitions or events where I can see your artwork in person?
An up to date list of the exhibitions I am taking part in can be found on my About page in the Exhibitions list.
If you want to be the first to know about upcoming exhibitions and get exclusive invites to private views, then sign up to my mailing list.
Are your abstract artworks available for exhibition in galleries or other venues?
I exhibit regularly with BobCat Gallery in London and Fronteer Gallery in Sheffield, and have had a stand at the annual Manchester Art Fair since 2022.
I love finding new galleries to work with, so if you would like to work with me, please get in touch.
I am also open to renting or leasing my work for commercial venues, offices, photo shoots, interior design or film projects , so please get in touch so we can discuss your needs.
Do you offer art classes or workshops?
Not currently, but I hope to in the future.
Please get in touch if you would like me to run a tailored workshop, painting demonstration or presentation for your group or organisation.

Prints
Do you offer prints or reproductions of your artwork?
Yes, I offer high-quality prints and reproductions of selected artworks.
Each print captures the vibrancy and essence of the original piece and is available in various sizes to suit different spaces.
Please get in touch to enquire about prints of specific works.
Which printers do you use for your prints?
I currently work directly with award-winning London-based printers, The Print Space. They carefully produce each fine art Giclée print with their precise colour management system.
What paper do you use for your prints?
My favourite paper is 308gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag, which I personally chose for its velvety texture and even colour reproduction. I may occasionally use other papers for special print runs.
What's a Giclee print?
Giclée describes digital prints created by inkjet printers and intended as fine art. It comes from the French word gicleur, which means jet or a nozzle, and the verb gicler (to squirt out). Thanks Wikipedia!

Can my print be framed?
My print from Print Space come with a choice of black, white or oak FSC®-certified wood frames with high quality glass windows and window mount options.
Some print drops will have a set framing and mount style if I feel this is best presentation for the work.
These options are available for UK customers only. International customers can get in touch for a custom quote.
For more on framing generally, see the Framing FAQs below.
There is no print drop open, can I still order a print?
Yes. Most of my works are professionally photographed or scanned, so can be reproduced to a very high standard. Sometimes I even prefer the print to the original, the quality is that good!
I select customer favourites for my print drops, but if you see a piece that you love and want a print of it, please get in touch. One off orders will be more expensive than the print drops, but I'm happy to give you a quote.
What is the return policy for prints?
As most of my prints come directly from The Print Space, they have their own returns policy, as follows:
In the unlikely event the product arrives to your customer damaged, we will send a replacement free of charge.
To arrange this please contact us at info@theprintspace.co.uk or use the chat icon in the bottom right of this page.
We only offer refunds if the product arrives damaged or is significantly delayed (postage delays which could be considered normal, or delays due to items being held up in customs will not be refunded). What constitutes a significant time delay is at our discretion.
In either cases we may request return of the products so that we can dispose of them. The returns in these cases will be at our cost, and refunds can be withheld until the returns are received by us.
You can read more here.

Framing
Do your paintings come framed?
Some of my work comes pre-framed and I always try to include photos of the framing on the product page.
Most of my work is professionally framed, and this is always reflected in the price.
If you would like to see more on the framing of a particular work, we can arrange a video call as sometimes this is the best way to see the framing up close (other than in real life)!
If you send me a picture of the space you have in mind, I'm also happy to mock up an image so you can see how it will look.
If the work is unframed, but you would like it framed, please get in touch. As you can imagine, framing adds extra cost not just to the work itself, but to the shipping cost.
You may prefer to use a framer local to you as this could reduce costs or be more convenient. I am more than happy to suggest framing options with you or your local framer.
Can you advise on framing?
Framing is very personal. It's your space and you know what you will enjoy looking at. Whether that's a natural look, a metallic frame or a contrasting or brightly coloured frame.
That said, I am more than happy to suggest options for any of my pieces. Just get in touch.
Where can I buy cheap frames?
Shop bought frames will never be as good in quality and finish as those produced by a professional framer.
But they can be expensive, especially if you are framing a lot of pieces at once.
So here's some more budget-friendly suggestions:
- IKEA offer some great frames at low budget prices and lots of choice.
- John Lewis are a little more expensive, but the build quality is a fraction better.
- Jacksons Art offers great quality, especially for canvas/floater/tray frame
- Best4Frames
- easyframe.co.uk
What's a floater, tray or box frame?
Floater, tray or box frames are for paintings on canvas, canvas board or paintings on wood blocks.
They mostly have no glass, and the canvas or block sits or 'floats' in the tray-like frame, usually with a small gap around the painting.
Aftercare
Any advice for displaying and caring for abstract artwork?
If you're not sure where to hang your artwork, or even how to hang it, or if you're planning to move or store it and want to know how to protect it, I'm happy to help - just get in touch.
How do I care for an abstract artwork?
Cleaning tips
Works framed under glass are can be dusted and cleaned with most glass cleaners or cloths.
If it's framed under acrylic rather than glass, then best just to dust with soft duster as scratches can occur with brushes, abrasive cloths or cleaners.
Canvases or surfaces with no glass just need a dust with a soft brush every month or so.
What to Avoid
Light: Artwork does not like direct sunlight. While my work is mostly varnished and I use archival materials where possible, harsh light will fade anything over time.
Water: Keep your artwork away from sinks or showers. If you like artwork in your bathroom, opt for a print instead. Canvases don't like humidity!
Heat: Similarly, hanging a painting over a very hot radiator or near an oven for a long period of time could start to warp the paper or canvas. And if not hung properly to the wall, radiator heat can compromise things like Command strips.
Storage
If possible store paintings upright. Don't stack them on top of each other.
If framed or a canvas, protect the edges all the way round. As an absolute minimum, protect the bottom of the painting or frame if it's stored on hard ground, floorboards or concrete.
Avoiding extreme light, water and heat are also a good idea when storing art.
Please get in touch if you want to know how best to wrap your painting for moving house or long term storage.
